Work and addiction
For many professionals, the temptation to relieve disturbing feelings by overindulging in drink, drugs and other addictive behaviours is irresistible. It's also understandable: who wouldn't be seduced by something that promises to make you feel powerful, successful, invincible and with the world at your feet?
However, as addiction tightens its grip on both the mind and the body this deceptive sense of liberation can be short-lived. It doesn't take long before increased quantities of alcohol and drugs are needed to maintain any kind of equilibrium, let alone bring back the elusive high which came so easily to begin with.
Impaired work performance, deteriorating relationships with family and friends, declining physical health and an inability to cope with even small tasks are just some of the side-effects experienced by addicted professionals.
